Programs Offered
Therapeutic Riding*
The Therapeutic Riding program is offered for students starting as young 4 years old. The goal of this program is to teach riding skills to individuals who have a disability. We use adaptive equipment tailored for the students needs. These lessons are taught by NARHA Certified Instructors who are assisted by trained volunteers. Classes can be private or group, from a half hour to an hour. They are scheduled once a week in an 8-10 week session. Progress reports are kept on a weekly basis to monitor progress towards overall goals. There are some disabilities that are not recommended for Therapeutic Riding, our staff will inform you if there is a concern. The first lesson is an assessment to determine tack equipment, volunteer needs, and physical ability.
Hippotherapy*
-- Hippo therapy program is on hold. Not offered at this time. --
The Hippotherapy program is offered for students ranging from 2-8 years old, not to exceed 100 pounds. Most students in this program have a physical disability. The session is lead by either an Occupational or Physical Therapist. The therapist uses the horse as a tool in the treatment of the student. The forward and lateral motion of the horse physically moves the student in such a way as to work on core muscle strengthening. Fine motor skills are exercised through grooming and tactile games during the lesson. The therapist is assisted by a NARHA certified instructor and a trained volunteer. The lessons are private, 30 minutes, and progress notes are kept by the therapist. Health insurance may cover the cost of the therapist. There is a separate Facility Fee payable to Rein and Shine of $35.
Horsemanship
The Horsemanship program is designed for beginner to intermediate students who do not have a disability. The intent of this program is to help fund the Therapeutic Riding and Hippotherapy programs. There are no scholarship funds for the horsemanship program. The goal of the horsemanship program is to teach basic knowledge of horses: catching horses in the field, grooming, tacking, mounting, walk, trot, correct position, trail safety. The horsemanship lessons are lead by Certified NARHA Instructors and trained volunteers as needed.
