Horsemanship

  • Objective: To provide a safe, fun environment for those who desire to learn how to properly care for, ride, understand and appreciate horses/ponies. A portion of all proceeds from the equestrian program will go towards funding the Rein and Shine Therapeutic Program.
  • Style: hunt seat equitation with emphasis on safety and horsemanship. All beginners just starting our program are required to take private lessons until the instructor feels he/she is capable of joining a group(usually a maximum of 4 lessons) Private lessons are 30 minutes and are available at the discretion of the instructor.
  • Attire: For safety purposes, all students must wear boots with a heel, preferably paddock boots or tall leather riding boots. ASTM approved helmets must be worn by all riders. Although we do have helmets available for your use, it is suggested that you consider purchasing your own in order to have the best fit. Riding breeches are preferred but not required. All of these items are available at the local tack shops.
  • Payment: All lessons must be prepaid for the month before a student can ride. Please keep in mind whether you are paying for a 4 or 5 week month.
  • Additional lessons: Lessons taken in addition to regularly scheduled lessons must be paid at the time of the lesson. Fees are the same.
  • Cancellation Policy: Lessons cancelled by phone 24 hours in advance, except in emergency, are eligible for make ups within 2 weeks of cancellation. Make ups not made in this time period will be forfeited and student will be billed for original lesson missed. It is the rider or parent’s responsibility to contact the barn regarding both cancellation and make up lessons. Cancellations with eligibility of make ups are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and emergencies and are limited to one makeup per month. All other lessons cancelled will be charged and forfeited. Vacations will be taken into consideration when ample advance notice has been given. Inclement Weather Policy: We will take advantage of this time to teach "barn lessons," where students will learn the essentials of grooming, feeding, proper nutrition, horse anatomy, and general horse care. These classes are just as important as riding classes, because students learn responsibility and gain awareness of just how much goes into caring for a horse on a daily basis.
  • Returned checks: There is a $25 charge on all returned checks. Credit cards are accepted.
  • Student responsibilities: Beginning with the first lesson, all riders will be taught how to properly groom and tack their horse. After a lesson, every horse must be untacked, cooled down, brushed and returned to his pasture/stall. All tack and grooming supplies must be cleaned and put away. Learning the responsibilities involved with caring for a horse is an integral part of a students learning process.

While we want you and your family to enjoy your time at Rein and Shine, please keep in mind that Rein and Shine is first and foremost a Therapeutic Riding Facility. Therefore it is VITAL that we maintain a calm, relaxed atmosphere at all times. To accomplish this, please keep the following rules in mind and discuss them with your

    children:
NO children are to be left at the barn unsupervised.
Siblings are welcome, but must be supervised at all times.
No running, horseplay, or unnecessary noise permitted
Inappropriate language will not be tolerated.
No pets are allowed on the premises.

Because we operate under the direction of NARHA (North American Riding for the handicapped), all persons enrolled in our riding programs are required to fill out a series of forms BEFORE their first visit to the farm.
